However, when I visited the old center I found it much better then I thought.  Not as bad at all, but yes, not as pretty as Cusco or Arequipa.  And Lima has got very, very poor and dirty areas.  There’s a brand new park with lot’s of fountains combined with a special lightshow every night that has some pictures of Lima before and after major improvements.  A lot has changed and improved!  However it didn’t mention any time on the before and after pictures.  Talking to my fellow paragliding student he said that 15 years ago the whole coastline was covered with garbage and empty bottles were floating in the ocean.  Nowadays it looks very OK and is still improving.

So I learned to paraglide!  Just like skiing at first, exiting the first flight, then pretty boring climbing up the dune every single time.  However, we did make 2 flights from a decent hill and it was worth it!  You are like a bird.. it’s amazing.  I’m still a beginner, but I’m flying solo   The hardest thing is understanding the environement.  Knowing how the wind goes, finding thermal vents etc..  It can be dangerous and seem very harmless.  Maybe I’ll fly once more in Argentina.

Paragliding

After this experience I went back towards Cusco as I hadn’t spend much time there.  Once I got there the hostel told me I left my camera in Lima (stayed in the same hostel chain). Darnmit!!  Talk about being lucky and unlucky at the same time.  At least I could get it back eventually, with a decent amount of stress added.  It arrived on monday around 16 o’clock and was supposed to be delivered to the hostel by the transport company.  I was kind of confident I’d get it, so went for beers.  However, it never made it to the hostel.  Meantime I bought a bus ticket for 22 o’clock to get to Puno (as I had to get out of Peru, visa expired).  The idiot that was to deliver the camera claimed he didn’t find the hostel (located at the second biggest plaza in Cusco??).  With lot’s of phonecalls and discussions I finally got it at 22.15.  We managed to delay the bus a little and I was to catch it at the forth crossing.  And to my luck, I did!  Still can’t believe that idiot.  It was even send with urgency.  The friendly cabdriver and other transport dude told me I needed to get angry with this guy when he showed up, but I told them I couldn’t do that in spanish and was way to happy getting the camera back.  Besides, any further delay would only deminish my chances of catching that bus.

Now, we’re in Bolvia, La Paz.  I’ve seen the Titicaca lake and the island of the sun.  Pretty big lake!  And a nice hike on that island.  Just about ready to leave for Rurrenabaque, located in the jungle.  Another 20h busride, if the weather stays clear.  Roads are unpredictable in the rainy season.  But I’ve had my share of muddy roads back in Madagascar with a “no comfort” truck.

Machu Picchu

After Machu Picchu I went to Nasca to have a look at the famous lines:  well, there are lots of lines out there!  But you can clearly see the different figures.  Nice job, whoever did it.  We can’t even make wheatcircles that nice.

To end the week (if the weeks ends on friday) I went to the Ballista islands, a bit off shore near Paracas (Pisco).  The place to be if you’re fascinated by birdshit.  Guano they call it, and there’s lots of it.  Well, actually you go there to see the birds that produce the guano.  Obviously these birds have names which most of them I forgot.  Some pelicans, some Jan Van Gent, black birds, white birds, you name it..  There should be flaminco’s in this region as well, but I didn’t see any.  (it is said that the Peruvian flag (red white red) is inspired on seeing two groups of flying flaminco’s) And besides the birds, the sealions.  Friendly animals mostly sunbathing on the rocks.

This week I’m in Miraflores, Lima.  The nicest district of Lima, at the coastside.  I’m following my long planned paragliding course.  I hope to be able to fly sole at the cliffs of Miraflores on my last day!  It’s pretty great so far!

Ampi

Er is een plein (een gebied waar men de stenen verwijderd heeft), een kerkje, het schoolgebouwtje, een keukentje en huisje en dan nog wat hokjes.  Daar woont slechts één persoon, de leraar.  Die heeft waarschijnlijk ook reeds lang de pedalen verloren.

Er zijn momenteel 4 kinderen in de school ergens tussen 10 en 16 jaar oud.  Geen enkel kind heeft hetzelfde niveau, en het niveau dat ze halen is het laagste wat ik ooit gezien heb.  GVI is er één dag in de week, en als wij er zijn doet de leraar niets, de andere dagen is het enkel de leraar.  Helaas is hij er veel van die dagen niet.  De kinderen zijn uiterst beschaamd, reageren haast niet en kijken vaker de andere kant uit als je iets uitlegt dan dat ze luisteren.  Ze hebben ook geen enkele stimulans, nog de ouders, nog de leraar kan het wat schelen of ze studeren of niet.  Er zijn geen andere kinderen, dus van deze kunnen ze ook niets leren.  Sociale vaardigheden zijn haast niet te merken.  Je bent als het ware de enige die hen probeert te stimuleren om iets bij te leren.  En dat beste vrienden is geen gemakkelijke klus.  Je wordt er serieus gefrustreerd van.  Vandaag was mijn enige dag in deze school en het is een hele moeilijke geweest.  Ik zie een vicieuze cirkel:  zij studeren niet en zullen later hun kinderen waarschijnlijk ook niet stimuleren.  De twee jongsten kunnen amper lezen of schrijven en ééntje ervan heeft nog een spraakgebrek.  Benieuwd hoe het verder moet..

Voorts rest mij nu nog 2 dagen lesgeven in Canacota.  Hoewel ik daar soms ook gefrustreerd geraak, is het in vergelijking met de Ampi ervaring een hele opluchting.  Straks ga ik wat testen verbeteren, benieuwd wat ze er van gebakken hebben.  Studeren thuis is ook verre van hun sterkste kant en ik merk het.  Maar het zijn tenminste kinderen waarmee je interactief kan zijn, er komt meer dan genoeg reactie.  Vaak is het van “no puedo”, gezegd in een zaagstemmetje dat moeilijk te immiteren is, wat betekent “ik kan niet”.  Maar het zijn best wel leuke kinderen!  Ik ga ze missen.

Vrijdagnamiddag verlaat ik dan Chivay om richting Cusco te trekken en een bezoek te brengen aan Machu Pichu.  Daarna richting Nazca om de lijnen te bezichtigen en dan bezoek ik nog een eiland ergens vlak voor de kust.  Dit alles is nog geregeld door GVI.  Voor mijn laatste week mag het al eens iets anders zijn.  6 maand lesgeven, het was een hele ervaring.  Ups en downs en veel mooie herinneringen!

Voorts ga ik nog tot eind dit jaar af en toe een berichtje posten (misschien wel vaker) om jullie daar thuis jaloers te maken.  Het volgende zal er eentje zijn rond de avonturenweek met GVI.

Chivay is waar ik momenteel vertoef, hoog (3650) in de Andes aan het begin van de Colca vallei.  Chivay een hele kleine stad of groot dorp (4600 inwoners) maar heeft gelukkig voldoende te bieden om het hier vol te houden (er is internet, een aangenaam marktje, voldoende zon, volk op de baan, ..).  Omringende dorpen liggen er meestal dood bij (zelfs in het weekeinde).  Ik heb nu nog zo’n 4 weken lesgeven voor de boeg.  De school hier ligt in Canacota, op zo’n dik half uur rijden van Chivay.  Een kleine gemeenschap (40 gezinnen of zo) maar een heel aangename school.  Ik geef er les (zoals steeds vanalles: matematica, ciencia y ambiente, communicacion y personal social) aan de 4de graad.  Dit zijn welgeteld 5 leerlingen: Erminia, Rodrigo, Frank, Araceli en Marilin.  De leerlingen hebben reeds een behoorlijk niveau dus is het best wel aangenaam lesgeven.  Ter vergelijking met Ecuador (laagste niveau ooit) is dit een opluchting.

Afgelopen weekend verbleef ik in Chivay.  Niet echt veel soeps ware het niet dat er een groot feest aan de gang was.  Alleen de muziek was op den duur niet te houden (ik kon het ene lied niet van het andere onderscheiden).  Ons hotel lag vlak bij het concertplein en de muziek was loeihard tot 5u s’morgens.  Zelf ben ik om te vieren (mijn terugvlucht is geboekt, jawel!) een pint gaan drinken op een ander feest.  Eens ik binnen was zag ik in de verte:  “Nuestra boda”, ons huwelijk maw.  Ik was op een trouw beland.  Soit, mijn pint was reeds besteld en heb die dan maar op mijn gemakje geconsumeerd.  Er werd behoorlijk wat afgedanst.  De gehuwden bevonden zich helemaal achter in de tent en ik had niet de neiging om als toerist tot vanachter te gaan verkennen.  Voorts zijn er de toeristische bars, maar daar was weinig volk te bespeuren.  Het werd absoluut gene laten. 

Dit weekend ga ik waarschijnlijk de Colca vallei verkennen gedurende 3 dagen, betekend meteen ook een vrijdag vrijaf.  Naar het schijnt is dit de moeite waard.  Kijk er reeds naar uit!  Ik ga het hierbij laten.  Zal later nog wat foto’s toevoegen.
